Broadwater and Bozeman Project
Ten middle grades teachers in Townsend (Broadwater County) and Bozeman launched the B&B project in August 2008. After a great training workshop at MLC, they returned to school to try out lesson study as a learning community. At a November workshop at MLC, they shared their progress (including video of their sessions) and planned for a spring expansion of the project. In Spring 2009, they will invite other building teachers to join them in a second lesson study cycle. At the same time, 15 pre-service mathematics teachers from MSU will enter Bozeman and Townsend classrooms to observe inquiry-based instruction, work closely with students learning mathematics, and engage in lesson study with the B&B teachers as they research ways to improve student learning. Internally, B&B teachers will strengthen school-based mathematics learning communities through lesson study, clinical observation, curriculum analysis, and standards alignment. Externally, pre-service and in-service teachers will build a “professional bridge” between MSU and the partner schools as they collaborate on lesson study, classroom observation, and analysis of student thinking.
B&B is a state-funded Mathematics and Science Partnership and a continuation of the two-year Gallatin to Glacier Project. The grant is renewable for a second year in 2009-2010.
