Evaporation Exploration

Students will answer the overall question, “How can we show evaporation in our classroom?” The students will work collaboratively to design an experiment that will show evaporation. The students will be answering questions regarding the water cycle prior to the setting up of the water cycle. This will be done with the thought that it will allow students to remember what happens when evaporation occurs.

Maize & The Three Sisters

The goal of this lesson was to make a strong connection between American Indian knowledge and culture and a Science topic students often explore in 5th Grade. During our unit on Living Systems, much of my students' work focuses on the interrelationships among various environmental factors, including human influences. The development of corn from teosinte through the use of selective cultivation is an excellent example of American Indian scientific application. Extending the lesson to the planting of corn, beans, and squash together as the Three Sisters offers a great opportunity to examine interrelationships among plants and humans.
